Today we had our Terry Fox run and the students did a fabulous job supporting such a great cause. Thank you to all the students and families for their donations and the school raised $1,700.00. To make it even more special, Mrs. Coupland (French teacher) came to support the day as well and their very generous family decided to match the amount raised. This means our school raised over $3,400.00 – GREAT WORK TO EVERYONE!
This week during our Literacy Centers, we have explored our small group books with more detail and reading expression. I have encouraged the students to track their reading with a finger if they are finding they are skipping words and/or to work on sounding out the more challenging words by breaking them up. We are learning more reading strategies to help improve our reading. Please continue to read at home with a parent and ask them to quiz you for your reading comprehension (by asking the 5Ws questions). In Writing, we have worked hard on adding more detail to our nouns and will continue with this next week as we are getting into our Walking Stories which describe a noun. This week in Math, we have discovered how to group items, such as a group of ants, into equal and more efficient groups. This is helping us apply our basic facts skills into real-life situations. For Science, we were able to go outside around our school to explore the many different sounds we noticed. Thankfully the weather was nice and each group came back to the whole class group and offered some very interesting sounds. We explored the sounds around the Playground and then in the middle of the large field (we discovered many similar sounds but then some very different ones as well). Also, the students had the chance to see what sounds they noticed in a quieter area such as the library and then the sounds inside our classroom. The students did a great job on this and next week we will continue with another science experiment that helps them learn more about High Pitch vs Low Pitch sounds. Social Studies has been based around the locations of our 4 communities and in figuring out what Natural Resources they may. The students are figuring out how their location determines what types of resources a community may have – warm climates/areas will have more crops and raising of animals where the communities near a shoreline will have fish.
Remember this upcoming Monday is our Grade 3 Assembly on Every Child Matters. Please wear an Orange Shirt with your formal uniform and if you don’t have an orange shirt, you are asked to wear your formal uniform. The Poem and Poem video are on our Weebly’s Homework page and it would be a great idea for each student to review these for Monday.
Enjoy your weekend and stay warm! Great work this week, Grade 3s! Keep it up =;)
