This Week in Room 5: Please ask your child/tell your parents about the amazing work you have done this past week in school. I have added a few pictures from 4 different subject areas to help with your sharing. What amazing work the Grade 3s did this past week as well as doing a wonderful job on their dancing! Keep up the great work and enjoy your long weekend. See you next week on Tuesday, Dec. 3rd =;)
What a great week of learning and in showing how we can make connections between subjects as well as within subjects. The students are beginning to see how important our Text to Self, Text to Text, and Text to World relationships are in making more sense of our learning. A great example is what we have been working on for Math (please see pictures). The students were asked to collect food items for our Veterans (demonstrating some Virtues such as Generosity) in order to help improve other peoples Quality of Life (based around our Social Studies learning). Furthermore, we explored how this could help other communities and in how we could use these items for Math and in LA. In Math, we discussed what types of shapes these boxes create and then labeled them as our 2D shapes and as our 3D shapes. This is also encouraging us to relate our learning to how we do addition problems, measuring distance (such as height, length, and even perimeter). Next, we are using these items, which are Nouns – Things, to describe them with detail using Adjectives. The students are doing a great job learning in different ways and in how we can relate our learning to other areas. Although this activity related nicely to Math, LA, and Social Studies, we did try to connect this to Science as well (discussing the sounds these boxes can make while lifting them, packing them on something, and in trying to figure out what is inside the boxes simply by hearing them shake).
Please continue to work on your Mathletics to help improve the skills we are working on. Each student is asked to complete the Numbers to 1000 section as well as exploring what the next section has (Add & Subtract Facts). Thank you to all the students and families who are doing their nightly reading and in asking questions based on the reading the students are doing. This greatly helps when they come to our Literacy Center groups – keep up the great work! Parents – a posting for our upcoming Field Trip to the Glenbow Museum on Monday, January 20, 2020 is now up on our Weebly’s homepage. We are asking for at least 4 Parent Volunteers and if you are available for this day, we would greatly appreciate your time and effort. Please look into this and let us know if you are able to volunteer for this, thank you in advance! Have a great weekend and see you next week for our Hip Hop dancing *whoohoo*. =;) I hope everyone is staying warm and enjoying the long weekend due to Remembrance Day on this upcoming Monday. The school put on a wonderful assembly this week to celebrate and remember the people who fought so bravely for our freedoms and life we have today. This worked into our Social Studies work in relating to our main topic on Quality of Life (making a Text to World connection). The students have worked in groups this past week in filling out charts on each of our 4 communities where we are discovering some very neat facts such as their languages, clothing, capital cities, and next is their festivals/celebrations. In LA, we have finished up a fun activity on our Walking Stories by describing a very interesting character (a noun). Our next goal, is to describe another noun but this time we will focus on how a setting will look in our stories. This will then help improve our introductions where we introduce our characters and settings to our story. During Math this week, we took a test that focused around Patterns and Number Sense. Although this was our focus, we will continue working and building on these topics for the entire year by relating them to other key units. The students are learning how many of the topics can relate much like our Pattern unit did. For example, we related this topic to using 2D and 3D shapes buy making patterns with them. Furthermore, we related these shapes to the distance around the shapes (perimeter) and continued with our basic facts in addition. Please continue to work on Mathletics to help strengthen these skills. All students should be working on Numbers to 1000 as both Patterns sections should be completed by now, thank you. In Science, the students had a wonderful and educational time exploring many items, such as instruments, that make different sounds. By focusing on our past knowledge, the students are making many new discoveries in how these items change volume and pitch, and how we can use these items in our everyday lives. Keep up the great work, Grade 3s and enjoy your long weekend. Please remember Tuesday is not a Formal Uniform day, thank you =;)
Picture – showing the work of some of the Photography students during our Grade 3 Options every Friday morning. They are beginning to see how to take more creative and interesting photos as well as transferring their pictures from their cameras to a computer. From here, they are working on using software to change their pictures in ways they never imagined before! It’s great seeing them use technology in such amazing ways and in applying it to our everyday needs and wants =;) |
